Is ChatGPT gonna take over Google?

  • AI

ChatGPT is the artificial intelligence trending at the moment. It had a blast on social networks (especially on LinkedIn) and it seems that its popularity is not going to collapse anytime soon as Microsoft wants to integrate the technology with Bing to change the online search as we know it. Is Google going to run for cover?

ChatGPT stands for Generative Pretrained Transformer: it’s an artificial intelligence NLP (Natural Language Processing) developed by OpenAI. It has the ability to replicate human language utilizing advanced machine learning algorithms.

The goal of this AI is to deliver a level of conversation most likely similar to the human speech.

There are a lot of tasks that this chatbot can manage:

  • Answer specific questions (just like Alexa)
  • Generate an article given a specific argument
  • Translate into another language
  • Coding (especially Javascript and Python)
  • Create tables
  • Translate SQL
  • and more…

Its models are based on its predecessor GPT-3, but optimized with human intervention. The main difference between this chatbot and other instruction based models is that this specific AI has been trained from start to finish with human input, from the questions asked to the answer given.

The service is free, all you have to do is to go on the OpenAI website and sign up with your Google or Microsoft account.

Microsoft has in fact bought ChatGPT and it has all the intentions to integrate it into Bing.

The introduction of an artificial intelligence in a search engine could be the new frontier of online search. Instead of typing keywords it could be possible to simply “ask” a specific question just like you would do to a friend.

Of course the technology is not perfect yet and it’s shown by the many errors it still has (which actually makes it more human).

Data don’t lie: with an increase of 96% monthly usage in February, ChatGPT is literally “taking a leap”.

Google has its own reasons to be worried about the potential of this new chatbot and it doesn’t want to give up on its online search leadership. That’s the goal of Bard, the AI based on the LaMda language.

Google’s chatbot is still in the development stage, but it already promised to improve online search as we know it. For example it will be able to integrate different opinions on controversial topics. Here an example:

Question: “is it easier to play the guitar or the piano?”

Answer: “according to some it’s easier to learn how to play the piano due to more natural movement of the fingers. Although many others say that is much easier to learn chords on guitar”

Google feels threatened for the first time in a long time, but is the fear for ChatGPT justified? Is it a revolutionary tool or just the heat of the moment? The results for now seem to prove the first hypothesis right, but only the future will give us a clear answer.

Surely ChatGPT is the most human-like artificial intelligence ever. Its results could be game changing in those fields where it’s not possible to solve the conflict without a human approach, where empathy is truly needed.
